SACF, Bone County — On Monday, June 29, at approximately 7:00 p.m., after a yard release of 21 SADCR inmates came to an end, tensions between two opposing racial groups of inmates led to a brawl. The brawl took place at SACF - DEPARTMENT A HALLWAY.
Correctional staff present deployed several Flameless Tri-Chamber CS bangers also known as teargas grenades in an attempt to contain the violent brawl, following the failure of lawful orders to bring about compliance. Correctional staff were immediately ordered to leave the area to avoid being outnumbered or put themselves under risk, to prepare a proper response to the incident.
A facility-wide lockdown was ordered by the Shift Commander, Lieutenant G. Dixon. Correctional staff intervened with proper response utilizing special riot control gear, and the violent brawl was successfully contained by certified personnel with the use of less-lethal methods.
Correctional staff identified the injured inmates who were tended to with Basic Life Support by certified personnel and were eventually transported to the facility's infirmary for further medical care. Correctional staff investigated the incident and were able to identify the instigators who were immediately removed from the General Population and transported to Secure Housing Units.
Newly appointed Facility Captain M. Estrada said the following, "I am happy to say that the correctional officers employed by this department are trained to an exceptional standard, and therefore, were ready to handle an incident as big as this where improvised weapons were used. Correctional staff contained the brawl to one area of the facility and handled it swiftly, with no correctional staff injured. I would like to take this opportunity to remind all staff to remain vigilant at this time of heightened tension."
