The Deuce (HBO)

Post by Nori » Sun Apr 23, 2017 9:45 am

From The Wire's creator, David Simon:
The Deuce tells the story of the legalization and ensuing rise of the porn industry in New York beginning in the 1970s. Themes explored include the rise of HIV, the violence of the drug epidemic and the resulting real estate booms and busts that coincided with the change. It will premiere in the fall of 2017.
Cast:
James Franco as Vincent Martino and Frankie Martino, twin brothers operating out of Times Square who become fronts for the Mob.

Maggie Gyllenhaal as Eileen "Candy" Merrell, a Times Square sex worker with an entrepreneurial spirit who is drawn into the emerging pornography industry

Anwan Glover (Slim Charles from The Wire).

Lawrence Gilliard Jr. as Chris Alston, an NYPD patrolman (D'Angelo Barksdale from The Wire).

Michael Rispoli as Rudy Pipilo, a Gambino family capo who oversees the Mob's financial interests in the sex business

Gbenga Akinnagbe as Larry Brown, an intense and demanding pimp who physically intimidates his stable of women but also has moments that betray a conflicted, underlying humanity (Chris Partlow from The Wire).

...and many more.
Yes.

Looks like another iconic show from these two. I loved the pilot. Felt a lot like The Wire premiere when it first aired, a lot of characters and environment being introduced, the atmosphere and '70s NY was absolutely amazing and I didn't expect any less from the writers, but the production and set design was just impeccable. The acting was superb as always and I loved everybody from Franco to Maggie Gyllenhaal and old The Wire cast. The characters got a lot of potential and they really fit the bill of the era. Oh and the soundtrack, don't even get me started on that shit, I knew from the intro with Curtis Mayfield's If There's A Hell Below, We're All Going To Go that it was gonna be a killer show. I got my hopes up and I think we're looking at another future classic from David Simon and George Pelecanos. Too bad I have to wait two and a half weeks for the next episode.

Cool setting and all, but it's been incredibly slow thus far. (haven't seen the latest ep yet)
Unless this is a 6 season show, then I can't see it being that great. A lot of potential with this theme and setting though.

Frank Sobotka is already my favourite character in the show.
