(D:) Hard drive issue

Post by Sheffield » Mon Mar 13, 2017 12:16 pm

Hi there,

For some reason my (D:) drive is taking the piss on me. It doesn't start my games via steam no more (I have done an update on STEAM, not sure if this has to do with it). Now I am trying to reinstall every single game I have but it just stops downloading and it says: Hard Drive fault.
GTA SA, which is located in my (D:) drive sometimes loads in game but after a solid 10 minutes it just freezes.
Sometimes it shows that the (any)folder can't be located but if I click it again it just opens (?!!!)

Windows 10 (SHIT OS)
Updated my drivers
Reinstalled GTA
GTX 1050 TI
i5 4430
8gb ram

Sheffield.

IT student here.

Given by the symptoms you have provided I have a solution and a question.

Try reconnecting it to the PC. Sometimes a hard drive needs a total restart.

Have you ever turned your PC off without following the proper procedure?
Have you ever worked with your hardware and shocked it with Electro Static Discharge accidentally?

Hi there,

I reconnected it and I will see if works, I will come back to you in a few.
Yes, my pc has turned off without following the proper procedure.
I have never done that.

Thanks for your help, if you've got more things that might help please!

EDIT: GTA V crashed after a solid 10 minutes. I also found out that it closes STEAM completely.

Shutting down a PC (wether its you or the PC itself) without following the proper procedure might cause harm to your hardware over time. The normal procedure (start menu > shutdown) makes sure proper order is maintained and all programs and system applications are shut down properly to ensure their safety and continiouncy.
Preventing a system from doing so (like simply pushing the ON/OFF button) completely shuts down the entire PC;
It shuts down your power supply, which ultimately gets your hardware into a state of shock; ''Where the fuck did my pwoer go?!'' and proper startup data and configuration might get lost. That is why you only may use the ON/OFF button for startup and an /emergency/ shutdown. If this is the case, backup your important files and format the drive.

Electro Static Discharge completely destroys your harddrive. See the picture in the spoiler, which is a microscopic photo of an ESD impact on a motherboard. This happens noticed (you would feel a shock when touching the device) and unnoticed (you dont feel anything at all, yet still transfer current to the hardware). ESD cannot be repaired; it is permanent damage.

It most likely is a hard disk problem, I recommend testing yours with HD Tune. You can get the free version online, run a scan for bad sectors and disable quick scan while doing so. Quick scan is not very accurate. If you see any red squares during the scan, you can be sure that it is a hard disk problem.

It seems to work fine but STEAM is still being a dick to me. Anyone else having this problem or knows a solution?

The only problem that pops up in my mind right now is firewall, try entrusting steam via firewall. And if you get a chance try clearing the download cache.

Just download, install and run this program:
http://www.hdsentinel.com/

If it shows that your HDD has less than 99% health than it's damaged.
If it shows that it's 100% then try changing the sata cable and plug it into different slot on the mobo.
