Role-Playing Modern Irish Mob

Post by Daniel_Kavanagh » Thu Nov 17, 2016 2:19 am

Character Creation & Development

Most mobsters within Irish-American organizations are third and fourth generation Irish, and come from a background of Irish family that have roots in Ireland. Those of which that are role-played in Los Santos have lived their entire lives here, or whatever their current residence may be. The same factor goes for your character's parents too, most like spent their entire lives in Los Santos. You are role-playing an Irish-American character, with a name that suits the modern society and trends that are on-going today. I personally feel that this is one of the most common questions I receive when it comes to Irish-American mob role-play. Although it isn't a difficult task, I have linked some websites that offer modern names to help with your character creation.

Irish-American fist-name examples can be found here: There are many guides that focus on character development and how you go about it. There shouldn't be specific guidelines when it comes to your character besides realism factors that are implied when role-playing. You want to have a feel for your character and be intrigued by the story you make while role-playing on him/her. Develop a character that resembles those of real life personalities, with emotion and create a connection to him/her. Don't expect an invitation to the criminal underworld when role-playing with illegal organizations, outfits, mafias, and mobs. There's a process that each individual must go through when trying to join, and work their way in.

How to Stand Out & Get Involved

Becoming associated with any criminal organization is a long and difficult process. In terms of the Irish Mob and the setting it takes place in Los Santos; there are ways and tasks that can be done to complete your journey into the organization. You must strive to gain respect from current members within the organization, by being loyal, well-spoken, and available when needed. Another concern I receive from members of any role-play community is that of the process to get involved with a criminal organization via role-play. Be patient and do not get discouraged by any means necessary. When you get shunned away from role-play and what not, it's all apart of the process. On any realistic level, you will never be able to just approach a mobster/group and talk your way in after five minutes.

Gaining respect from fellow role-players in the organization will get your name heard and they'll want you to continue working/role-playing with/for them. No one goes un-noticed, your role-play is seen. Perform role-play that gets your name out in-character;
  • Earn your own money via business such as trucking, loan-sharking, etc.
  • Dominate a racket that your character excels in so that members have a reason to take you in ICly
  • Be patient and wait for your time to be included as an associate
  • Look for jobs at fronts and legal positions for the organization
Rackets & Money

There are many rackets that can be used by any member of an organization to generate money. The criminal underworld has an endless list of illegal rackets that are constantly changing. As an associate or member, you must offer something to the upper echelon to be wanted/needed by the organization. You are given the opportunity to operate under the name of the organization with full protection, start-up money, and the connections to the various rackets. In return the leader figures expect a sum which is known as a "kick-up", or even a "cut" from your activities. Through earning comes respect and a better position within the organization with the more money you generate.

A racket is a service that is fraudulently offered to solve a problem, such as for a problem that does not actually exist, that will not be put into effect, or that would not otherwise exist if the racket did not exist. Conducting a racket is racketeering. Racketeering is associated with organized crime and is the act of offering a dishonest service. A racket can exist in many forms; that of a legal business in which you help it succeed in an illegal manner or an illegal business. Some examples of rackets include:
  • Murder - the killing of another human being without justification. In an illegal sense, murder is committed to get rid of problems, people or done for money. Some people kill to get rid of problems with other illegal organizations or kill someone within their own organization to clean up a mess. Murder-for-hire is also a know racket, this is when people or other organizations pay someone for a "hit" to be carried out so they do not get their hands dirty.
  • Kidnapping - an action when someone is taken against their will. People will kidnap someone to gain information on them or people from their organization. This is done either by an organization/person or by someone being hired to do so. In most cases people are kidnapped and tortured to give up important information based on the illegal underworld and sources that said person has knowledge of.
  • Gambling - this is a huge racket and probably the most notorious one too. People gamble at some point in their lives and it's even legal to a degree. You're able to run gambling rackets such as underground poker/blackjack rings in basements/backrooms. You can throw down some dice on the street to make a quick buck. You're able to take the gambling racket to new heights each and everyday. By dabbling in gambling you're able to take a cut or even skim a few dollars off of the top of each game you host.
  • Arson - is the act in which you set a house on fire. This can be done as a form of retaliation on a rival organization or person. You burn down an establishment or home to retaliate. You can do that to also gain money from an insurance policy, if you set-up a fake house fire.
  • Robbery - this is a broad racket. You can make money by robbing someone random off of the street for what they have in their pocket. You can also take it to a big scale and plan out robberies/heists on people of interests, buildings, trucks and even banks. You are usually armed and have a planned procedure to walk out with as much money as possible.
  • Bribery - bribing someone is like black-mail. You are able to hold something over that person's head to ensure they do what you want. For example; if you have proof someone's husband slept with another woman and know that he's rich. You can milk him for his money and ensure him that you won't send it to his wife. It's a form of insurance that you get paid and he won't skip out on it, as you have that on his head.
  • Loan sharking - is the act in which you loan money to a person/business and ask for more money in return at a later date but with interest. You are able to ensure that the person who has loaned your money will pay you back by raising the interest as time goes on and if they don't pay, they are usually beaten, killed or their possessions are stolen/ruined.
  • Extortion/Protection - you ask for money to ensure protection of a person or business. When you extort someone, you go in there knowing they are going to pay you. You set them up as a client of yours, and if they don't pay or listen to your demands you retaliate in a violent manner such as beating them or ruining something of theirs. You are paid to protect them if they cooperate with your demands, which would be money on a weekly basis. So if they run into trouble, you are there to assist them.
  • Counterfeiting - you can counterfeit bills and other forms of identification to sell them for money, such as drivers licenses.
  • Theft - this is also a huge ring. You are able to steal anything; from vehicles to products. You can heist vehicles and flip them on the street, sell them for parts or ship them off to another country for money. You can steal from stores or off of transport trucks to sell stolen products and electronics to pawn shops or to people on the streets that need a cheap new television or piece of clothing.
  • Fraud - you can commit fraud in many ways. One of which is through credit/bank fraud, when you steal account information and use it as your own or sell it to other people. You can also forge statements, such as bonds to cash them in for money.
  • Firearms/narcotics trafficking - probably the most known racket. You are able to buy and sell firearms and narcotics to flip them on the street, getting them from a known supplier. Although it sounds easy, it's usually a very dangerous racket to exist in. People are killed, robbed and beaten daily over firearms and narcotics.
Ranks & Structure

There are crews in any organization such as the Italian mafia, and other organized crime groups. The entire ranking system isn't claimed aloud by all members of the organization for all to hear. It goes to show who has power and respect, and who does not. The structure is not of importance when you plan to join the organization until you have become an associate, or "associated". As an associate you'll belong to a crew, and usually there are one or two crews for an average sized mob, especially on LSRP.

Irish Mob in Today's Society

There are many documentaries, movies, and even television shows to help depict how your character should look and act. Some of which will help even more than this thread as it gives you visuals and you get to see first-hand how some people act.
The list goes on and on, this gives you an idea of how much information is out there to grasp a good idea of how to role-play. Irish factions on LSRP have also existed in the past and will come in the future. Take a look back on some of the factions that left a name on the server before-hand:
Danny's Notes

This is a section for how I want to express how important developing your character is and giving him/her a personality. Ensure that you role-play realistically; meaning sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. Have fun, it's interesting to get beat-up, shot, robbed, and go on from there. It adds to your background and character and gives him/her life. Not to mention, so do the ups in the game, they also add to the background of your character. If you make a lot of money you can express that by driving a nice vehicle, wearing nice clothes, and the way you act. Don't just spend money because you have it on your account, develop that bank roll, just as an example.
