[Guide] Criminal Mentality 101

Post by Red Garland » Wed Sep 25, 2013 8:45 pm

Here's a short little guide I put together a while back for a private faction forum. It's been laying around in my My Documents ever since and I found it now while transfering everything to a new computer. Hope you find it useful.

Criminal Mentality:
For a succesful portrayal of a mobster, first thing you need to do is to come up with a rough sketch of your character's history especially in regards to what made him lean towards criminal life, as it heavily influences the way you develop your character. Next to the usual lust for money and/or power, feeling insignificant and seeing crime as the only way to conceal your insecurities you have to also acknowledge the influence of pop culture. In these days you'd be surprised how riddled the organized crime is by wannabes who got the wrong impression from the movies and set their foot into this world in hope they would end up being characters portrayed by the likes of Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino.

A common misconception and a myth that needs to be debunked is that a criminal leads a rich life in which he is feared by everybody and doesn't have to worry about anything. The reality is, being a career criminal mainly consists of having to think twice about answering the door, having to hustle 24/7 due to lack of any real source of income and getting through every day with the awareness that your every mistake could be the last. Joseph D. Pistone in his book "The Way of The Wiseguy" (Pistone's experience is mainly with the La Cosa Nostra but this book is foremostly a great study of criminal mentality in general, it's a great read which I recommend) described a situation where the curent boss of the family he'd been running with has been assassinated. He said "I didn't ask around, I only took the information they gave me and never asked for more. If a bust was to happen in future or any other thing, I didn't want people to wonder Why was Donnie so curious about things a while ago?". Differences between Irish and Italian organized crime are present in terms of structures, mores, somewhat racial differences but every caucasian criminal descending from a low/medium-income, blue collar working class community (Hell's Kitchen, Bensonhurst, Hoboken, LS' Ocean Docks, whatever) shares this same mentality. In these tough post-RICO times everyone is paranoid. Even a single, smallest way of you standing out of the line, a simple seed of doubt about your credibility is planted, your life is put on the line and so-called wiseguys have learned to just live with this fact. They know every day they wake up might be the last day because of a petty way they fucked up somewhere along the line. In the mob there are no demotions, dismissals or deductions, violence and ultimately murder is the only way of enforcing anything. A succesful gangster always analyzes his behaviour in terms of how he could be percieved by others and is in a constant state of paranoia. Then again though - your character wouldn't develop such mentality right from the bat. Character development is key here but I hope I've given you the basic idea of what to aim for.

How to stay ingame and enjoy it:
Have an elaborate project going on for yourself. Simple as that. Things like extortion, robbery, drug dealing, the usual shit will keep you entertained but only for a short while. Have something going for yourself that if nothing else is going on ingame, you have this one thing to work on. For me it was porn. I ran a shady amateur porn production company and MAAAAN it was fun. I can't give you a good idea right off the bat now but hopefully you get the basic concept. It only requires some creativity. One good idea is to come up with an activity your character is good at and just stick to it - like assemble a elaborate car theft crew. Get two or three more associates with you and work it whenever there's nothing interesting going on. Sometimes you don't feel motivated but then all you have to do is just bring up that one activity and trust yourself it'll be fun if you get into it.

Don't be a robot:
Bearing the girst paragraph in mind, gangsters for the most part are not monsters. They're people just like us. In regards to criminality, they're more thieves than they are murderers. Sure, they kill people and they sometimes do it in grisly ways but except for nutjob cases like DeMeo or Kuklinski they find no joy in it and furthermore, they cry about it at nights and even visit shrinks. It's just a sad chore that comes with their profession. That being said, you can "smile" instead of "smirking" with ease. There's nothing wrong about a simple "hello" instead of "ey" once in a while. Except for wannabes mentioned above, gangsters are the people they are not because they enjoy it but because, at least in most cases, they come from commmunities that project life of crime as their only shot at achieving something big and living the good life.

A short and turbulent one, but still a "good" one.

In the last bit there at the bottom, you have "girst" instead of "first". But I did like it.

This Guide is amazing!
I wish that the majority of the LS-RP criminals would act like a real criminal and not like some TV-villain.
Not everyone can be a John Greer or General Krantz.
