This is a short out of character narrative for the background story of my character, Manuel_Alcabu. The following information should not be used in character in any way, shape or form. The topic will be expanded and updated in the future to add more depth, and reflect development.
Manuel Zaccaria “Manny“ “M. Z.“ Alcabu (born August 24, 1974) is a Cuban American gangster who is a former New York Marielito gang member and a current member of the Cuban crime confederation. He was born in Havana, Cuba and raised in New Jersey, United States. His criminal career started in his teens, growing up in impoverished neighborhoods, and befriending original Marielito gang members in Northern New Jersey and the South Bronx area of New York City.
He was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to NYC at the age of 6 after being processed at a refugee camp set up in the greater Miami area during the Mariel boatlift in 1980. In the 1980s, Manny and his mother relocated to North Bergen, New Jersey, where his mother ran a bar, and wrote numbers and sold lottery to earn extra income. Despite his mother’s effort to keep him out of trouble, he got involved in the local bolita (Spanish for Little Ball, a type of Cuban lottery) operation, resulting in his association with Marielito gang members at a young age.
Manny suffered loss in his family early on. He lost his father when he was four, and his mother died when he was sixteen. He was taken in by fellow gang members around the North Bergen during his teenage years and his reckless nature and tendency to get into trouble contributed to his drift into crime. During this time, he began taking drugs and committing crimes even though he wished to become an accountant initially but changed his mind when he was making good money illegally.
At 21, Manny left New Jersey for Los Angeles, “The mid-1990s saw a rise in the presence of Cuban organized crime in Los Angeles/Long Beach, combine that with M. Z.’s previous criminal experience and his future in the Cuban American underworld was cemented.“ The new-found opportunities L.A. had to offer made him a lot more money compared to New Jersey and worsened his cocaine dependence and concurrent marijuana use.
While his outspoken personality and flamboyant style in the Los Angeles nightclub scene earned him many headlines in his twenties, including a hefty criminal record (never convicted, however), he has become very low-key over the past decade. Law enforcement suggests he has become more diplomatic due to his link to the Cuban crime confederation in Florida.
Manny is currently known to live in the Marina area of West Los where he runs and frequents many local businesses that contribute to the social, cultural and political activity of the district. His involvement in criminal activities is unknown.
