S/S Baldwin Village Housing Projects

Baldwin Village was developed in the early 1940s and 1950s. Baldwin Village is occasionally called "The Jungle" by Willowfield locals because of the tropical trees and foliage, such as palms, banana trees and begonias, that once thrived among the area's tropical-style postwar apartment buildings. The Los Santos City Council ostensibly changed the name in 1990, after many residents complained that it reinforced the neighborhood's image as a wild and menacing place. They officially renamed it Baldwin Village, to reflect the affluent and peaceful Willowfield neighborhood nearby, one of the most affluent couples neighborhoods in Los Santos.

Feds and the LSPD got in on the act this morning as more than 50 Baldwin Village gang members accused of drug trafficking were arrested, according to an FBI statement. Authorities say they are from the Black P Stone set, which runs those curvilinear streets of Westmont and Fremont Ave.
More than 900 officers were involved, the FBI says, and it was the second raid on the Baldwin Village gang in the last six years. The operation was so big that cops used the LS Sports Arena parking lot as staging grounds.

Fifteen of 21 people indicted on federal drug trafficking charges were taken in the raid, according to the FBI. A couple are in custody and three are outstanding, said Thom Mrozek of the U.S. Attorney's Office in LS.
Seventy-five gang members in all were targeted. Feds say most of the allegations involve meth and crack.
Authorities say the grabbed 135.5 grams of PCP, 41.2 grams of methamphetamine, 25 kilos of marijuana and 1.7 kilos of coke.
Assistant FBI-LS. director Steven Martinez. "The strategy involved dismantling the gang's infrastructure by arresting the main players and by removing the businesses where gangs launch their criminal activity"

The LS City Attorney's office got in on the act and is "pursuing civil actions to include property abatement, evictions and case conferences for fifteen of the gang?s controlled businesses and residences," according to the FBI statement. U.S. Housing and Urban Development will also kick gang-affiliated residents out of subsidized housing, according to the FBI.

Will it work? Don't know. The gang has controlled those streets for decades and obviously made a comeback after a 2016 crackdown dubbed "Operation Stone Cold." This one was called "Operation Red Dawn."
Shiara Davila-Morales, of the District Attorney's office added that "23 gang members arrested on state warrants, and five others arrested on non-warrant charges" such as parole and probation violations.
Most of the suspects could face five to 40 years.

The Jungle is a trip. It's one of those only-in-LS neighborhoods that looks almost idyllic, with a tarp of trees (which give it's nickname), wall-to-wall '40s and '50s-era courtyard apartment buildings, and bending streets with names like Westmont Avenue. It's a valley nestled below the tony Willowfield Hills, with few ways in and out.
It has, in the past, been a deadly place, and "Training Day's" depiction, while exaggerated, seemed to give some life to the reality of the village.
In 2016 someone targeting her father shot and killed 3-year-old Kaitlyn Avila, opening the world's eyes once again to the Jungles.

The Black P. Stone Nation, or BPSN, is an American street gang founded in Chicago, estimated to have more than 30,000 members. The gang was originally formed in the late 1950s as the Blackstone Rangers. The organization was co-founded by Eugene Hairston and Jeff Fort. In later years, under Fort's leadership, an Islamic faction of the gang emerged, naming themselves the "El Rukn tribe of the Moorish Science Temple of America" (or simply El Rukn, Arabic for "the pillar" or "the foundation").
Considered by law enforcement authorities to be Chicago's most powerful and sophisticated street gang, the BPSN finances itself through a wide array of criminal activities and is part of the large Chicago gang alliance known as the People Nation. Under Fort's command, the BPSN assumed an increasingly revolutionary outlook as it became associated with the black nationalism movement, eventually attracting the attention of the Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who introduced them to Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi and Nicaragua's Sandinistas. In 1986 four of its members were indicted for conspiring to commit terrorist acts in the United States for the Libyan Government. The verdict marked the first time American citizens had been found guilty of planning terrorist acts for a foreign government in return for money.

The BPSN originated, and is based, on the South Side of Chicago in the Woodlawn neighborhood. As of today, the gang has since advanced in the Northwest Indiana communities of Gary, Merrillville, Crown Point, and Portage. It has then proceeded into other areas particularly Nashville, West Tennessee in the United States and Melbourne in Australia, consequently its presence and growth continues to increase. There is a set in the West-Side, Black P Stones in the Los Santos area called the Jungles and the Bity in the area called Fremont & Adams. They were founded by OG Lafayette Washigton (cousin of T. Rodgers) from Chicago after he moved to Los Santos. When he was 13 years old he built his set, with 500 or more in membership extending from Chicago to Los Santos. They also are affiliated with the Bloods due to the Bloods and the Piru's protecting BPSN in Los Santos from the Crips when they began in Los Santos.

Black P. Stones "Jungles & Bity" is a division of the Black P. Stones Chicago gang in some parts of Willowfield.

The BPS gang consisted of two separate neighborhoods: The City Stone Bloods, also known as the "Bity" in the Mid-City area, and the Jungle Stone Bloods, the exclusive area once known as the Jungles (during the 1960s to the 1990s) now officially known as Baldwin Village, saw 115 murders and more than 1,500 assaults from 2016 to 2017. The Black P Stones Jungles & Bity first emerged in San Andreas in 2016 and had operated in the Princeton & Rosemont area of Glen Park, Los Santos: https://forum.ls-rp.com/viewtopic.php?f ... Stone+Bity. Over the years the P Stones had grown into one of the larger gangs that were in South Central Los Santos in the Willowfield District. There were an estimated 100 members of the Black P Stones, 50 of whom had lived in Baldwin Village.

The Black P Stones (BPS) are a well-known active African-American street gang located on the South Side Willowfield District of South Central, Los Santos. The Black P Stones was established by O.G. T-Rogers (former member of the Chicago, Black Stone Rangers) in the late 1960s. The Black P Stones consist of two sub-sets The Jungles and The City.

The Black P Stone “City” AKA The “Bity” is located in the Arbutus St & Elbert St district of Willowfield, Los Santos. Which, run from Dead-End to Adams Park.
The Black P Stones “Jungles” is located in the Willowfield district of South Central, Los Santos. Their neighborhood resides in the Baldwin Village apartment complex (The Jungles), in front of Adams Park. Between Fremont Ave and Westmont Ave.
They Claim the hole Baldwin Village community, as their territory with a majority of gang members in Los Santos and over 40,000 membership nationwide. Parts of Training Day (movie) was filmed in Baldwin Village apartments, which also co-starred Cle “Bone” Sloan (actor/director) ex-gang member of Athens Park Bloods.

The Black P Stones are on good terms with majority of the blood gangs in South Los Santos, especially the Jungle Town Piru's of Ganton and the Rollin 20s Neighborhood Bloods (The Rollin Stones). In the past they have waged war against other powerhouse gangs in South Central Los Santos such as the Rollin 30’s Harlem Crips, Rollin 40's Crips, all Crip factions and the Playboy 13 and the 18th Street Gang, one of the largest Latino gangs in the city.

The Black P Stone Nation was originally formed in Chicago, Illinois and is one of the very few Los Angeles gangs that has historical roots in another city. During the early 1960s, The Blackstone Rangers formed on the Southside of Chicago under the leadership of Jeff Fort (b. February 20, 1947) and Eugene Hairston. After Fort’s release from prison in 1976 the Black Stones changed their name to the El Rukns.
Usenis Perkins writes in Explosion of Chicago’s Black Street Gangs the history of black gangs in Chicago (1987) and makes several references to the Black P Stones in Chicago. Like most black Chicago gangs, their names is rooted in a religious or spiritual identity, and the Black Stone is a reference to the Muslim roots that the early founders had. The Black Stone or the Kaaba Stone is a Muslim relic located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. According Islamic tradition the Black Stone dates back to the early human history of Adam and Eve. The Black Stone is in the center of the Grand Mosque in Mecca in the eastern cornerstone of the Kaaba, in the direction in which Muslims pray.
It was in 1969 when a young T. Rodgers (b. 1957 – ) formed the Black P Stones in Los Angeles with the approval of the Original 21. Initially it was a community based organization that operated in the West Adams area of Los Angeles near Crenshaw Blvd. In Uprising (1995), by Yusuf Jah and Sister Shah’Keyah Chapter 9 includes an interview with T. Rodgers that contains information about the history of the Black Stones in Los Angeles. T. Rodgers discusses the organization that existed during the early 1970s and some of the community work and activities that they were involved with. Since then T. Rodgers has appeared on several television programs and movies on the topic of gangs including Colors (1988) as Dr. Feelgood and he was a participant in the 1989 ABC Special on Gangs hosted by Tom Brokaw. He is also featured in the F.E.D.S. Magazine DVD where he gives an interview from the Jungles, discussing the early days of LA gangs. He was also featured in and American Drug War, a film about how the U.S. government has contributed the the drug problem in America.

The BPS consists of two separate and distinct neighborhoods; The City in the West Adams area and the Jungle Stones, the once exclusive middle class black community during the late 1950s and 1960s. The Jungles, or Baldwin Village as it is officially known as, is adjacent to one of the most affluent Black communities of in the United States, Baldwin Hills. In Donald Bakeer’s book, Crips (1987), the Jungles community is discussed as a haven for middle Black class residents during the 1960s.
The City Stones, the original Black P Stone gang in Los Angeles, includes the clicks of 21st Street, 25th Street and 28th Street. The City Stones were previously known as the 21st Street Black P Stones at a time when there were no clicks. That means everyone from the City claimed 21st Street as it was part of the BPS identity. During the 1990s, clicks formed new identities under the City Stone umbrella.
For most of their existence, the Jungle Stones, had no clicks and everyone from that neighborhood was known as Jungle Stones (JS) but in recent years some of the younger members created sub-clicks under JS. Prior to the Jungles becoming BPS there was a gang in the area known as the Jungle Boys during the very early 1970s.

The Jungle Stones represent the 2nd faction of the Black P Stone Nation in Los Angeles. As an extension of the original Chicago Black Stones, The Jungle Stones formed when the already established City Stones linked up with the Jungle Boys in the Baldwin Village section of South Los Angeles. During the early 1970s, the Jungle Boys transition to Jungle Stones solidifying a second neighborhood.
Even though the City Stones in the West Adams section of Los Angeles have a close relationship with the neighboring Rollin 20s Blood, they are just as close with the Jungle Stones in Baldwin Village.
