Exactly, you get those small shocks (e.g. when a hunter jumps at you or such), and you'd be more afraid in a dark map compared to the light maps in L4D2. I still prefer L4D2, though, mostly because of the improved quality and the more abilities there are in the updated game. There's still many positive sides of L4D1, and that would for example be its rawness, which makes it much more scary than version two of the game. In fact, the two versions of the game has different things to show and give to the player, it's almost two different experiences.
After I realised what you said Craxx, I've just started to install L4D1 on my computer again. I got to confirm that it is darker and more scary than the second game. I'll post here when I have played a few games, if my laptop can run it.
